About

Kristin Opitz studied archeology (2011-2014) earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Archeology of the Ancient World [Archäologie der Alten Welt] from the University of Leipzig in 2014. From 2014 to 2019 she studied towards a Bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Leipzig and a Master’s Degree in Prehistory and Early History from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. From 2013 to 2015, she was a student assistant at the »Antikenmuseum« in Leipzig. She then worked as a tutor at Leipzig University’s Chair of Prehistory and Early History (2015) and as a student assistant at the GWZO (2015-2019). In 2020, she was a volunteer at the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology of Saxony-Anhalt at the State Museum of Prehistory in the editorial, graphics and photo department.

Kristin Opitz has been a researcher and doctoral candidate at the GWZO in the department »Humans and Environment« since November 2020.

Work focus

  • Late Antique cemeteries on the Danube; Danube Limes in present-day Austria and Hungary 

  • Old findings from the Carpathian Basin

Current topic of research

The project focuses on bringing together and analysing both published and self-compiled archaeological and anthropological data from late antique cemeteries of the erstwhile Roman provinces Noricum and Pannonia to gain deeper insights into the lives of the people and their environment.
