About

Uwe Müller was born in Waren (Müritz). He studied history in Leipzig (1983-1988) and was a doctoral candidate at Leipzig University (1988-1992). In 1992/93, he was researcher at the German National Library Leipzig.  Later he worked as a researcher at the Humboldt University of Berlin (1993-1999), the European University »Viadrina« in Frankfurt (Oder) (1999-2008), and the Saarland University in Saarbrucken (2008-2011). Since 2011, he has been a senior researcher at the GWZO. He received his  PhD in economic history from the Humboldt University of Berlin (Faculty of Economics and Business Administration) in 1997.

Since 2016, Uwe Müller has been Principal Investigator of the Collaborative Research Centre 1199 [SFB 1199] »Processes of Spatialization under the Global Condition«.

  • Economic and social History of Eastern Europe from the 18th to the 20th Century

  • Economic relations between Eastern Europe and the “Global South” (1945-1990)
  • Agrarian movements, land reforms and cooperatives in East Central Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries

Uwe Müller is holding lectures at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, at the Europa-University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) as well as the Saarland University in Saarbrücken and the University of Leipzig.

Current topic of research

This section examines the European Comecon states’ economic relations to countries of the Global South, East-European companies’ operations in the European and global transportation markets as well as the political and scientific efforts to alter the global economic order.

As part of researches into Eastern Europe’s trade relations with other parts of the world from the late 19th century to the present, this section particularly analyses the politics of foreign trade and infrastructure as essential elements of East-European positioning strategies within economic globalisation.

This section examines the transfer of economic institutions into Eastern Europe and their adaptation to regional parameters, value judgments and patterns of behaviour. It is searching for answers to what role processes of entanglement and globalisation played in the formation and development of regionally specific cultures of economic activity.
