About

Mikhail Ilchenko studied sociology and political sciences at the Ural Federal University in Yekaterinburg. Hereceived his PhD from the Institute of Philosophy and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Yekaterinburg in 2011 and later worked there as a researcher and senior researcher. Since 2014 he has completed several research stays as a postdoc and visiting scholar at the Center for Urban History of East Central Europe in Lviv,Ukraine, the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) and the GWZO in Leipzig. Mikhail Ilchenko works in the field of social sciences and cultural studies andhas carried out research on modernist urban legacies in Poland, Ukraine, Russia, the Czech Republic, Israel, France, Germany and elsewhere. He is involved in a number of international academic and educational projects exploring thechanging perceptions and functions of modernist urban areas in Eastern Europe and countries of the former USSR. 

Mikhail Ilchenko has been a researcher at the GWZO within the collaborative project »Cities.Building.Culture« since 2021.

Current topic of research

The Soviet Union’s most ambitious urban and social experiments included the construction of new »socialist cities«. When state socialism came to an end, this legacy underwent profound transformations. This study throws its spotlight on its changing perception in the context of local identities and the national narrative.
