The GWZO and its partners
Collaborative research is a cornerstone of the GWZO’s work. Both for the accomplishment of long-term goals and everyday research activities, the GWZO relies on a dense network of research institutions across Eastern Europe, in other parts of Europe and overseas. Equally important are links with local partners in Leipzig, in the wider region and in the Leibniz Association.

The Leibniz Research Network Central and Eastern Europe
In recent years, the Leibniz Association has brought together its extensive expertise on Eastern Europe within the Leibniz Research Network »Central and Eastern Europe«. Here, the GWZO finds partners to share experiences and ideas and develop joint offerings for academics, politicians and the wider public.
Leipzig University
Since 2003, the GWZO has been an »affiliated institute« of Leipzig University. The university and the Leibniz Institute have been successful partners for many years in teaching and jointly running graduate schools, summer schools and the SFB 1199 »Processes of Spatialization under the Global Condition«.
The Leibniz ScienceCampus »Eastern Europa - Global Area« (EEGA)
The GWZO is part of the Leibniz ScienceCampus EEGA. This integrative platform tests new research approaches, develops joint projects and debates controversial perspectives on Eastern Europe and its changing role in current and historical global processes. International EEGA fellows are welcome guests and visiting scholars at our institute.
Forum for the Study of Global Condition
Within the framework of the federal and state governments’ Excellence Strategy, the universities and relevant research institutions in the region have joined forces to collaborate in research, doctoral training and teaching.
Leipzig Science Network
Collective expertise is an asset for both research and the management of institutions. This is why Leipzig’s scientific institutions have joined forces to form the »Leipzig Science Network« so that »our scientists can work creatively, freely and cooperatively«.
International collaborations
Research with the world
Our work also involves long-term research and knowledge transfer projects with international partners. These projects include archaeological research on the Cervenian castles and Armenians in East Central Europe as well as landscape archeology projects in Pannonia or close cooperation with partners in the Czech Republic in the context of the establishment of a branch office in the Czech capital. The GWZO has a number of long-term cooperation agreements. You can find a list of our partners by country here.
